I've been curious about laser hair removal, but the whole deal makes me nervous. Anyone have any good experiences? Bad? Recommendations and/or places to avoid? Also, about how much does it cost? Razor-free sounds tempting, but...eeee, laser.

Middle East trip journal entries, Part VII (Aqaba, Jordan/Nuweiba, Egypt)

Dec. 11th, 2009 | 05:23 pm
posted by: [info]theklute

October 9, 2009 - Aqaba, Jordan

The Jordanians love their King - Malik Abdullah II, may his reign be prosperous and bountiful - and his pictures are every where to re-enforce that. As kings go, he seems fairly harmless. There he is waving to his subjects from a faded poster, there he is with his family (the Queen is beautiful, of course), there he is in full tribal regalia. Dozens of variations of a theme of benign despotry, from the backs of cars to pictures on cash registers (the Arabic text above these I imagine does not say "DO NOT TAKE CHECKS FROM THIS MAN", but my Arabic is too shaky to confirm that).

My favorite image is that of the king, looking through the scope of a rifle (sometimes with the image of a hawk in corner). It appears exclusively on the back windows of BMWs and Mercedes, owned by young men who are showing off their wealth. It appears to be an iconic image - the Jordanian version of Al Pacino's white-suited Tony Montana, a billboard that says "Hey, like the King, I am a tough guy!"... a way to be obsequious and daring at the same time. According to Omar, the King is actually a tough guy - trained as a sniper and a paratrooper.

The girls in our group unanimously agree he is more attractive with facial hair.

...

Aqaba's not a tourist stop, at least not for us. We're here just to catch a ferry. We've got a couple of hours before we've got to do anything. We talk a walk through the city, passing a park, and crash at a cafe. One of the things we have learned is that falafel is NOT a lunch or dinner food in Jordan, it is mostly a a breakfast dish. Since it's breakfast time, we are all eager to have falafel. Except this particular restaurant does NOT have falafel... but Omar talks to the hosts, and they cook us up some. It's a nice a gesture.

...

Here in Aqaba is the 2nd largest flagpole in the world, and probably the largest Jordanian flag. When we pulled up to the city, and the wind is slack, the flag is not flying. Now at the cafe, it is flying, but not taught, it's just a nice breeze. With the city of Eliat, Israel across the Gulf of Aqaba from us, I wonder if this is meant to be a thumb in the eye of Israel. Both cities are modern - Eliat seems a bit more modern. I wonder if this is meant to be a thumb in the eye of Jordan.

Leaving Jordan, adventures on the high seas, and epic Egyptian bureaucracy )

How to quit smoking and other cravings

Occasionally, my friends ask what to do about smoking and other addictions. Here is about the only method that works for me. In essence, [info]iamkatia smoked two pack of cigarettes a day for 25 years. Then she quit without major difficulties by simply embracing and patying attention to her cravings. (By the way, she describes what she did in terms very similar to what I heard once from the Vietnamese Zen monk, Thich Nhat Than, on a very similar issue). More behind the cut. Read more... )

"Magical music on "Eurasia" is full of apprentice's patience, unruffled cal and Buddhist leniency towards all living beings. We hear insisde ourselves what is there and take it as it is". Simply speaking, they are playing the air and aren't being in a stew. The most important discipline of The Winter War In Tibet is the lightness and naturalness - the lightness and naturalness of running water.

Band THE WINTER WAR IN TIBET was formed in 2008 in Minsk, Belarus. This is collaboration of musicians from Minsk groups BOGOMATER’ CVETOV (FLOWERMOTHER), URLA MAKABRA, INSUMTHINMAGMA, CHILDREN OF ISHIZUKE TREE, THE SHAPE, SANGIITA SHUNAKA and SNEZHINKI. A distinctive feature of the band’s music are the sound experimentation and improvisations at the junction of ethnic, rave and rock. Band’s name comes from the similar book written by Swiss writer Friedrich Durrenmatt. THE WINTER WAR IN TIBET has made its debut at the opening of the international festival “Kamen” («Камень») in Minsk in October 2008, accompanying Damo Suzuki, the world-known vocalist of cult German kraut-rock band CAN. In 2009 the band recorded about 20 improvisatory releases.

The last 1/2 of 2009 really dragged us into the red, and we need to do some "stabilizing".

To be clear, the funds part will be helping us, and the "extra" xmas gifts will be given over to Tumbleweed for their kids. Think, like cloths for teens, backpacks, thermals, heck even your old ipod or game system would be receive with thanks, trust me.

Does anyone know anyone that has or do you have a "puppy play pen" or type of "puppy run" that you'd like to sell for a decent price or would like to donate to the 2nd chance dog rescue group??

I'm needing one so that I may take in a couple of pups that are less fortunate but I don't have the proper equipment at the moment to get them in my nice warm home faster.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
If you'd ike to donate or anything I can give you the contact info.
Thanks!

Write with Inkless Pens

Dec. 10th, 2009 | 12:52 pm
mood: determined determined
posted by: [info]redgeisha_13

I haven't been writing much in the last month; truth is my inspiration, my drive are both pretty shattered. Questioning why I write and if I still want to .. both are up in the air. I used to walk onto stage with a saunter, a "I can win with any piece" confidence that has been replaced with second guessing myself and what I believe. This is not me. Have I been going to be earlier and earlier; have I been sleeping less and less? I am Lauren's painted smile. I have four new pieces and one, I am tempted to do this evening on page. It's a funny sex piece I wrote a couple weeks ago for Fire Stage and well, if third round comes and I'm just fucked, I'm going to bust it out. Make a point to accent the paper dramatically and perform it the judges. Make or break me. Something needs to happen because questioning if I want to keep slamming after seven years, 7 years and to what? Stop? It's a dramatic sense to find yourself so sure and then suddenly be wrong.

Tonight, I have no direct plan. A list of pieces that I could do but might not end up doing. Usually, I have a set performance list, tonight I'm going to go with my gut and hope I can get part of the person I left behind me somewhere on the highway.

Questions, as always, will be fielded on site.

"The Quarry of Annihilation" - Ghazal 2589 - Rumi

To: Sunlight@yahoogroups.com

~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You imprisoned in air nine spheres of emerald till
you brought into orbit a form of earth.*
Water, what are you washing? Wind, what are
you seeking? Thunder, why are you roaring? Sphere,
why are you turning?
Love, why are you laughing? Reason, why are
you binding? Patience, why are you content? Face, why
are you pale?
What place is there for the head on the road of
fidelity? What worth has life itself in the religion of
manliness?
That man is perfect in quality who is the quarry
of annihilation; there is room for not one hair in the circle
of uniqueness.
Whether anguish or joy, it is far from freedom;
cold is that person who remains in hotness and coldness.
Where is the gleam of the charming brow if you
have seen my moon? Where is the gleam of drunkeness if
you have drunk spiritual wine?
Has not disquietude from this purse and that bowl
seized you? After all you are not a blind ass; what are you
circling around?
With the breast unwashed what profits it to wash
the face? From greed you are like a broom, you are always
in this dust.
Every day for me is Friday, and this sermon of
mine is perpetual; this pulpit of mine is high, my screen is
true manliness.
When the steps of this pulpit become empty of men,
the spirits and the angels will bring a present from God.
*In the past it was believed that the earth was encircled by nine spheres.
Do you know what you'll be doing for New Year's Eve yet? I'm trying to find somewhere that a group of my and my husband's friends could dress up fancy for and have a good time. I just got an email from Howl at the Moon that offers penny drinks from 7-midnight and a buffet from 7-9, but I've never been there and would like some other options anyway.
Where have you been that proved to be an amazing place for New Year's Eve?
There is a very short list of people the Writers' Block crew would hand the reigns of their night over to, but this cat is on it.
Everyone's favorite British person named Chris - British Chris - will be hosting the open mic tonight! He is leaving to return to the land of the Queen in a few days and we figured we'd send him off with a bang!
So cherrio, tut-tut and all that rubbish, come on out and see what manner of bizarro unfolds tonight as we are once again colonized by the English. Or get a picture taken with the closest thing Columbus has to James Bond! Or Doctor Who. Or The Prisoner. Or Prince Charles.
